BRUBAKER-Real-Life Heroism
It's not simply the location photography at an Ohio State Penitentiary nor the use of some few hundred ex-convicts as extras that gives BRUBAKER the stuff of roal life. BRUBAKER, although it is a fictional drama, was partly Inspired by the true-life experiences of Thomas Murton, who was hired in 1967 to bring reforms to two Arkansas prisons. Much of the plot is derived from Murton's horritying expose of prison conditions and Murton himself actively aided in the production of the feature. Prior to filming, Redford had long discussions with Murton, drawing out the former wardens observations and feelings. Between these conversations and Murton's participation in the film-ing, BRUBAKER emerges as a realistic portrait of a true modern-day horror story. BRUBAKER is a moving saga because it is a look at what it really means to try to be a hero in today’s complex world.
