From the Spring 1987 Banana Republic catalog - The quintessential American boot, adapted from the fabled footwear of the Old West's horsemen and women. Originally, cowboy boots came up almost to the knee to protect the legs from thorns and hooves; tapered toes and elevated heels made it easy to slide into stirrups and stay there. We modified this classic design for pedestrians rather than equestrians: The insole is tenderly padded and the outsole covered in a Vibram ribbing, making the boots as luxurious to walk in as they are to look at. The lambskin leather is specially treated to produce its unusual texture: After the skins are tanned, they're subjected to heat to shrink them slightly.
