This vivid blue shearling coat was handmade by Betty David (1938 – 2007), a Native American fashion designer renowned for her handmade coats and leather goods. Her work is shown in the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston, Illinois and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. She has sold her work at major galleries and has received attention in major publications. Look her up.
This shearling features thick blue suede with a hand painted Northwest Indian design and black leather trim accents. It is completely fur lined and thickly luxurious. Per the attached pictures you can barely see what looks like a pen mark on the left shoulder and some kind of mark on the right shoulder. These are not visible unless you know they’re there. I consulted with a museum curator at the San Diego Museum of Natural History and was informed that these can be removed. He told me that standard dry cleaning is not appropriate for a leather jacket as dry cleaning removes the natural oils from leather and therefore these oils need to be replenished at the end of the cleaning process. He suggested I take the garment to a dry cleaner which specializes in the treatment of leather.
Measurements are:
32" shoulder to hem
20" armpit to cuff
26" armpit to armpit
32” back length nape to hem
