First published in 1996, this a parody of detective novels. It's the 19th Discworld novel and the third in the City Watch sub-series, but Discworld books can be read in any order. The story: People are dying suspiciously in the city and Sam Vimes of The Watch needs to find the truth. But how to begin, when these deaths do not bear the clean, efficient marks of the Assassins' Guild? There’s no motive, and there’s no trace of anything alive even having been at the crime scene. Can a machine be a murderer? Who's been leaving behind those tracks of white clay? And who on Discworld is slowly poisoning the Patrician? Is that somehow tied in? Will the City Watch find the right clues before that empty-headed new king seizes power?
