It's most likely alpaca, which isn't sterling and has no silver in it. I've been there as well and there was a ton of alpaca. But...you never know.
marsha709
@viebie interesting I have never heard of that they sold it as Sterling but no way to really know. it polishes up well.
viebie
Of course they did, they even had some fake sterling marked as sterling. Now China and India are doing the same thing. That's why now I try to never buy so-called sterling when it's made in China. I guess the best way to check is to have a huge magnet or you know the sterling testing chemicals.
marsha709
@viebie I'm not familiar with what you do with the magnet but it sounds like it would be valuable info do you mind passing it on and where would you get the chemicals to I'm assuming test?
viebie
I don't have the chemicals, but I'm sure they're sold online or at a Walmart or something like that. The magnet will tell you if it's magnetic, which sterling silver isn't. However, the magnet would have to be a strong one. Also, stainless steel isn't magnetic, but to me it's easy to tell the difference between sterling and stainless. And if I had your item in front of me, I could tell you if it was alpaca or sterling. Sterling has a different patina.
viebie
Silverplate looks like sterling silver, but the magnet in most instances will tell you which it is.

@viebie thank you

You're welcome.

@marsha709 Hi, the easiest thing is to take it to a pawn shop and ask them if it’s silver. If it’s not, I don’t think you have it priced too high, but I would just relist it as “vintage Alpaca silver Mexico” or something like that.
