Born Laurel Anne Harte in the San Fernando Valley, California, on New Year's Eve, 1945, to parents Ann and Russell Hart After her parents' divorce, Ann supported Laurel and her sister Suzi, working as a seamstress and designer. Burch tells the story that her legs “broke in midair” when she was seven and eleven, and that she broke another leg by falling at the age of thirteen. Laurel began her career out in the public eye with a newspaper blurb about her, at age 4 ½, and her sister selling their bumper crop of over 60 pumpkins to neighbors.She died on September 13, 2007, aged 61, at her home in Novato, California from complications of osteopetrosis, a rare and painful bone disease she had her entire life, suffering more than 100 bone fractures as a result.
