A piece of fashion history! Incredible vintage 60s Gustave Tassell for I. Magnin silk dress. The simple, minimalist design has sleeves that flare out, a high round neckline and A-line shape. The top portion of the dress is ivory and the bottom is a dark chocolate brown. Side pockets. Zips up the back. I'm not sure if the white zipper is original although it has a lining to cover it so obviously well thought out. The construction and seams indicate this may be couture. No size or fabric content labels but it feels like a heavy silk and it's best for size 4/small, check measurements. Excellent condition.
Approximate flat measurements:
Armpit to armpit: 17”
Waist: 16.5”
Hips: 18.5”
Length: 38.5”
Shoulder to shoulder: 15.5”
Sleeve length (shoulder seam to cuff): 21”
Gustave Tassell was one of the great American couturiers and a Coty Award winner who became a fashion star in the early 1960s with starkly refined clothes that appealed to women like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Greer Garson and Princess Grace of Monaco. He designed clothes that Jackie Kennedy wore as first lady on a highly publicized goodwill tour of India in 1962. He was hired by the house of Norell to take over when Norman Norell died in 1972. His clientele desired what he called "a subtle form of chic" — coats, dresses and evening wear in fine silks and gabardines and subdued colors, with simple lines that skimmed the body and price tags that sometimes exceeded those for a car.
