Cushendale is Irelands oldest woollenmill and has been in contiouss operation as a woollen mill since first established in the 13th century.The first mill was established on the site of Cushendale in 1204 by the Cistercian monks of Duiske Abbey, the mill race that they channeled to power their mill continues to run today and is likely to be one of the oldest mill races in existence today. After the closure of the Abbey in the 1539 under Henry VIII, the mill continued to operate by lay people. The Cushen family have been operating a mill in since the 1800s, and always living on Mill Road. The textiles made at the mill today have a direct link to this rich heritage through the water supply, machinery and skills that have been passed down over the years.
