austindignan Waste across measurement?

cheihn1970 @austindignan I’m genuinely curious, when people buy pants don’t they go off of their waist size? The size that fits them? My waist is 36, these are 38’s because I want a little extra room. Why do people always ask for measurements? These are 38’s in Carhartt Fr Overalls. If you wear 38’s in Carhartt pants or overalls then they will fit you.

austindignan @cheihn1970 hey! If it’s a sincere question I can explain. Tagged waste size is pretty useless for knowing how something will fit, brands vary widely, it’s not an exact measurement. The variation is even more dramatic with vintage garments as lots of washing or wear can shrink or stretch garments….

austindignan …. For instance lots of vintage Levi’s 501’s labeled size 36 34 might actually measure 33 30. For overalls it’s also more complex because they’re historically labeled two different ways 1. What they actually measure 2. The measurements of the person they would fit. Since they have to go over the body and not just the waste, if the waste actually measures 34 all round it would be better for for someone’s whose a 31 waste…

austindignan …Basically tagged sizing, especially for vintage garments, isn’t reliable for a buyer and knowing your own measurements and seeing photos of the garments your buying is a much more consistent and reliable way to know how something will fit. I used to go just off tagged size and ended up wasting lots of money on stuff that want close to fitting. So that’s why people ask.

cheihn1970 @austindignan Fair enough. These aren’t vintage. I work in the Arctic and purchased them two years ago. I’ll get you a measurement across the waist tomorrow morning. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

austindignan @cheihn1970 oh that’s dope! Does sound like they’d probably be a little too big got me as I’m usually a true size 34x I was hoping no maybe it was literally 38 inches around but it sounds like that’s probably not the case.
