Charlayne Hunter-Gault is an Award-winning journalist, author, and school desegregation pioneer, American civil rights activist, journalist and former foreign correspondent for National Public Radio, CNN, and the Public Broadcasting Service. In this Memoir she reflects on her childhood and young adulthood, including her historic role as one of two black students (she was the first black woman) who desegregated the University of Georgia. She tells how she used the power of family love, self-reliance, and self-esteem to combat a very hostile Southern University, (having to attend classes under the shield of the National Guard) to carry her to her historic leadership role in the civil rights movement and beyond.
