His love for the West, and particularly horses, spending time on his uncle's ranches in Utah during his early years. Polland held several jobs prior to becoming a full time artist including jockey, electrician, farmer, commercial artist and teacher in his own art school. Polland's work is permanently displayed at the Whitney Gallery of Western Art (Cody, Wyoming); and the C. M. Russell Gallery and Museum (Great Falls, Montana).
