Shoushan village is located near the Shoushan Mountain where stone is mined from. Shoushan stone reached its peak during the Quing dynasty (1644-1911).
This antique Quing dynasty Chinese soapstone sculpture has varying shades of beige, brown, off white, dark brown and black colors. It is hand-carved with beautiful flowers leaves and trees on the frontside of the sculpture perhaps depicting a garden. The sculpture is multi-dimensional. At one time, the two tree trunks hollow inside areas may have been used to hold brushes, flowers, or to burn incense.
There is damage to the backside at the top of each tree trunk where some of the sculpture is missing; however, it doesn't take away from the beauty of the soapstone sculpture. There is a piece of soapstone glued back onto one of the tree trunks. The backside of the sculpture also has an open work design.
Approximate dimensions: Height: 5 inches; Width: 4 inches at its widest point; Depth: 1 inch.
This beautiful soapstone sculpture s a stunning piece of Chinese artistry making it a fine addition to your Asian antique collection. This piece is perfect for decorating purposes or to perhaps display on an altar.
