The company was founded in 1948 in Monterey, California, by Guthrie Sayle and Moira Wallace. The Drake Well is an oil well in Cherrytree Township, Venango County in Pennsylvania. Drilled by Edwin Drake in 1859, it is the first commercial oil well in the United States.
