Vintage Ceramic Vase Yapacunchi Ceramica of Cuenca, Ecuador Signed by the artist Crespo Made by either Pedro or Pablo Crespo -- founding brothers of Ceramica Yapacunchi Circa 1970s Made of Andean stoneware, with a mottle glaze in shades of blue, turquoise on the upper part. Bottom part - terracotta. Gold colored rim & vase opening, glazed inside of the vase Felt on the bottom Excellent condition H: 7 1/2" Dia of top opening: 1 7/8" Diameter of widest bottom area: 4 1/4" The tradition of ceramics from Cuenca, Ecuador starts around 1500 B.C. Later during the colonial period, Cuenca maintained a leading position as a center for ceramic artistry. This legacy has been reinforced in recent years though the enthusiastic participation of reknown contemporary artists and decorators who have added prestige to the ceramics from Cuenca. Today, the name Crespo is a symbol of this tradition in ceramics, due to the collaboration of Pablo and Pedro Crespo.
