Del Iron Cloud, a Hunkpapa Lakota, was born in 1949 on the Standing Rock Reservation, located on the border of North Dakota and South Dakota. After graduating from high school in 1968, he spent two years at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and went on to attend the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1971 and retired in 1991 as a Staff Sergeant. His large-size acrylic paintings sell for thousands of dollars.
This small, original watercolor features a Cedar Waxwing perched on a branch. These birds are known for their unique behavior of passing berries from one bird to another until the fruit is fully consumed, illustrating the value of generosity and mutual support.
The 3x5 inch painting has been double matted to 5x7 inches. Del Iron Cloud titled and signed it in pencil as well as signing and dating it in watercolor along with his ‘peace pipe’ glyph. The painting is in like-new condition and doesn’t seem to have ever been displayed.
