This dramatic black felt hat consists of a cap surrounded by an oval shaped brim trimmed with two pink feather sprays at the front, finished with small felt bows. It is a rare statement piece showing the dramatic millinery fashions of the 1940s'. Label: "NEW YORK CREATIONS". The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City and the ILGWU. Under the leadership of fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, Its purpose was to advance the sales of dresses and clothing made in New York by promoting the city as the fashion center of the country. The "New York Creations" label was used to identify the products of members.
The wartime 40’s saw a huge variety of hats that were suitable for any face shape, hairstyle or personal preference. Throughout the war and on both sides of the Atlantic, elaborate creations brightened dreary utility fashions, brought about by rationing. In fact the only items not rationed were hat materials. Explosions of feathers, veiling and artificial flowers were popular. They were dubbed in France as ‘piece de resistance’ or ‘resistance piece’ against Nazi occupation.
This hat has been lovingly preserved in wonderful condition among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Mannequin not for sale.
