The richly embellished Birds of Paradise pattern chosen for this bell appropriately reflects the history of German chinaware. It was in Germany, in the early 1700s, that the ancient Oriental secret of making hard white porcelain was first discovered in Europe by Fionann Friedrich Bötter, a young apothecary's apprentice.
Pioneer German porcelain makers emulated Chinese and Japanese “brocaded decorative themes featuring naturalistic, yet splendidly showy, flowers, floral sprays and birds of brilliant plumage - a delicately accentuated with gilt. Such patterns have remained popular over the centuries for their elaborate detail and their vivid hues of blue and crimson.
