It was in Germany, in the early 1700s, that the ancient Oriental secret of making hard white porcelain was first discovered in Europe by Fionann Friedrich Bötter, a young apothecary's apprentice. Pioneer German porcelain makers emulated Chinese and Japanese “brocaded decorative themes featuring naturalistic, yet splendidly showy, flowers, floral sprays and birds of brilliant plumage - a delicately accentuated with gilt. Such patterns have remained popular over the centuries for their elaborate detail and their vivid hues of blue and crimson.
