I see a lot of lovely skirts. Do they arrive completely unscented? I have health issues due to detergents and fabric sprays like fabreeze. Can I safely buy from you?

@immelzie I don't know how much you already know about DGY recycled sari wrap skirts, so please forgive me if I give you any information you already know. These skirts are made from used, discarded, and/or surplus saris from India. The previous "life" of the fabrics before being made into skirts (by co-ops of artisans in India) is completely unknown. Which is to say that it is impossible to know what detergents, perfumes, dyes, spices, oils, soil, etc. the fabric has come into contact with.

@immelzie As far as I know, the artisans do not wash the fabric before sewing it into skirts. The skirts arrive to DGY fully packaged, and DGY ships them to customers (myself included) as they arrived from India. I take the NWT skirts out of the packaging to photograph them, but do not wash them or spray them with anything. I have opened skirts that smelled strongly of anything from moth balls, to body odor, to cooking oil. I have also opened skirts that had no discernible smell at all.

@immelzie In short, no, I cannot guarantee that a skirt you purchase from me will be unscented. I am also sensitive to many smells and products, so I totally understand. I have definitely gotten the occasional headache or sneezing fit from opening a new package of skirts. That said, I have not yet had a skirt that still bothered me after washing it (and I always, always recommend washing before wearing).

@immelzie Obviously I do not know the exact severity of your sensitivities, or how it compares to my own, so I cannot really advise you on specific skirts, and I have definitely read anecdotes of other skirt purchasers who came across a beautiful skirt that they just could not seem to wash the smell out of. Hopefully I don't sound like I am trying to scare you away from these skirts, but I do want to be completely transparent about what you can expect from them.

@immelzie I hope my answer is helpful, and please feel free to reach out again if you have any other questions!

@tovinova Thank you. I appreciate your candor. I'd much rather have that, than spend money on something that I can't wear for 6 months! The fragrances are marketed as a plus, that they will last through100 washes. And thank you for explaining how the skirts are made. I didn't know that!
