Dashiell Hammett Short story Holiday in The New Pearsons Magazine July, 1923 v49 #7
Holiday, a 3-page short story, is one of Hammett s earliest works of fiction. It is not a crime story, but a sensitive vignette, possibly autobiographical. War veteran Paul Hetherwick is a patient at Public Service Health Hospital in San Diego. With economical, prose Hammett lets us know that in addition to his lung disease, Paul is suffering from a bad case of ennui; he doesn t care whether his horses pay off or if bar-girls drink up his money. He spends his last 45 cents in a lunchroom, and returns to his hospital in a fog.
