RARE ELBERT HUBBARD'S SCRAP BOOK (1923) EARLY 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN VINTAGE LARGE FOLIO
DESCRIPTION:
The rawhide used to bind the spine of the volume together has disintegrated and re wound with new string. It appears to be original to the volume and was tied in the same fashion in which the volume was first found. Elbert Hubbard is not only the founder of the American Arts and Crafts era Roycroft Press, but is also something of an American icon, in his approach to design and its very particular, turn-of-the-century American flavor. Although influenced by earlier English and perhaps even German decor, Hubbard was said to have met and have been influenced by fellow Arts and Crafts iconic designer William Morris. The effect of the visionary Elbert Hubbard on the Americanization of design, having previously been always 'borrowed' from Europe, is enormous. The influence of Hubbard and his Roycroft Press was enormous and became broadly popular, reaching its peak between 1900 and 1915. Hubbard, was once a salesman for the Larkin Soap Company but came to influence even the likes of giants in American design and architecture, such as the visionary Frank Lloyd Wright and the trajectory and future of American culture and design. Elbert Hubbard is clearly one of the least known Americans, who may have had the greatest influence upon his country and culture, but whose name is barely mentioned and for which generations of Americans, have never heard of or uttered his name. Fantastic.
