Biography of the paleontologist, priest, writer, and co-discoverer of Peking man who developed a theory claiming to unify cosmic evolution and Christianity.
About:
When Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, French-born scientist and writer, died in New York in 1955 he was virtually unknown. Since then, as the subject of numerous essays and several biographies, he is seen as a major figure in contemporary thought. His study of an evolutionary process at work in the cosmos produced his best-known book, The Phenomenon of Man.
Charlie May Simon describes Teilhard de Chardin's early life, his vocation as a Jesuit priest, his career as a paleontologist--particularly in China, where he helped discover Peking man -- and his final years in Africa and America. What emerges is a portrait of a warm, vastly intelligent human being for whom the spiritual was as much a part of reality as the world of matter.
