Louis Valtat (1869-1952)
Valtat has depicted this turn-of-the-century woman
with her piled-up hair, in the informal manner of
the Intimists, Vuillard and Bonnard, who were
friends of the artist from their student days at the
Académie Julian in Paris. Though Valtat exhibited
with the Fauves at the Salon d'Automne in 1905. the
major influence on his work was his older friend,
Renoir, who made a lithograph portrait of Valtat
published by Vollard in 1911.
This intaglio reproduction of Valtat's drypoint is
printed by a modern method closely resembling the
original process. It therefore retains a high fidelity
to the original print from which it was taken
for
example, in the raised effect of the ink on the paper.
To insure that it cannot be mistaken for anoriginal,
the reproduction has been reduced fractionally
in size and the platemark bears the blind stamp of
the present publisher, Graphophile Associates.
