A mix of folk art and pop. Whitaker was famous in Europe where they called his music Schlager music. This music is usually catchy instrumental accompanied by easy-going, sentimental lyrics. It is notable, however, that neither of Whittaker's greatest hits featured his greatest skill, which was a stunning ability to whistle. To listen today to any of his virtuoso whistling songs — Finnish Whistler, Mexican Whistler — is to be struck by how unfamiliar the sound of truly competent whistling has become.
