Charles Gladding, Peter McGill McBean and George Chambers established Gladding-McBean & Co. in Lincoln, Placer County, Calif., in 1875. After merging with the Los Angeles Pressed Brick Co. in 1924, Gladding-McBean & Co. had plants in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Alberhill and Glendale. Franciscan Ware was produced at the Glendale (later Los Angeles) plant, which began life as the Pacific Art Tile Co. in 1902. Gladding-McBean chose the name ""Franciscan,"" feeling it was symbolic of California's early history. Production of Franciscan earthenware ceramics with its brilliant glazed colors began in 1934. Franciscan china was introduced in 1942.
