Franz Anton Mehlem Tapestry Vase, 1890s Bonn at Steingutfabrik This is a very beautiful piece of pottery artwork. The texture is lovely which is from firing the vase after it was wrapped in cheesecloth. Once cooled, the vase was then hand painted and gilded. This was an advanced technique developed for that time period. There were very few potters able to perfect their art with the tapestry method. The paint colors are still vivid and clear. This is truly an amazing piece of artwork. I will double box as well as use copious amount of bubble wrap. It is marked on the bottom with an embossed FAM and the circular Franz Ant. Mehlem Bonn/Rhein, and number 127. in gold, hand painted. This mark was used from 1870-19 There is slight wear to the gold. Reasonable offers are considered.
