These French museum antique piece of art from the 19th century were made in Paris.
The barrels and eye caps are clad in iridescent mother-of-pearl with a warm golden glow that has flashes of pink and green. The brass frame is accented with narrow bands bearing ridged decoration.
These 19th century mother-of-pearl opera glasses display beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of antique French opera glasses. In case you are unaware,Mother -of-pearl in English
a smooth, hard substance forming a layer inside the shells of some sea.
The name mother comes from the belief that the mother nacre shields and bears the pearl just the way a mother does to her child. Such is the marvel of nature - the nacre (mother of pearl), a magnificent piece of beauty to us, is actually the protective mechanism for oysters against external objects.
This magnificent piece of history is also accessory to have on hand when attending an event some distance from the stage.
It's recommended to have a relatively low level of magnification (4x to 8x) and a wide field of view. Mine are 8x25s. The Met Opera Shop has ones with up to 10x magnification, I think, but it's such a huge theater, the higher level of magnification would work better there than in little European house. This is a charming antique that will highlight a special Opera event and it will make you stand out!
No original case included as it got lost.
This piece is from the 1800’s.
