This one is special. Gold Framed Box Purse with Emboidered Tapestry panel. By Pichel, 1940s. (A French luxury handbag company popular in the US through the 1940s & 1950s. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a Pichel evening bag in its costume collection.)
This collectible evening purse is a soft flocked material (possibly “Velvasuede”) in black, including a strap that can be used as a top handle or worn on the shoulder.
The gold metal frame is embossed in an intricate floral pattern and finished with a solid bar clasp.
It features a multicolor embroidered tapestry in a classical nature motif complete with partially enrobed maidens, suitors and a winged putto.
The roomy interior is lined in black satin and offers not only five slip pockets in varying sizes, but also its original attached clip coin purse.
SIZE: Meaures 7.5” H by just over 7 1/8” W by 1 3/4” depth at sides (2” deep at base). The strap drop is 8 1/4”, which allows you the flexibility to wear it on your shoulder, if preferred.
CONDITION: Excellent. It’s astonishing how well preserved this 80-year-old bag has been. The only condition issue to note is that the base board (likely cardboard) inside the fabric at the bottom has split. The bag is structurally sound — it’s just not perfectly flat on the base.
