This is a magnificent example of the fabulous millinery fashions of the 1940s'! This is a black felt hat made in a top hat style. The crown is medium size and tubular in shape. It has a short brim. There is a wide black grosgrain band surrounding the crown as well as a full green veil. There is an elastic band attached to the inside in order to keep the hat in a tilted position. The showstopper curled feathers that project from one side. There are teal colored feathers, as well as black ostrich feathers. Simply stunning!
Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these.
Label: NEW YORK CREATION
The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City & the ILGWU. The label was created by a group of well-known designers who wanted to remain anonymous & wanted to support the New York Creation label & keep it competitive with French styles of the era. The label is small, white and blue.
This is an authentic piece of fashion history! This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Feathers, straw, flowers & veils are fragile, given their age. Mannequin not for sale.
