Jewelry featuring these mysterious rock crystal orbs, also known as... "pools of light" began to appear late into the Victorian Era, and became more prevelant as Chinoiserie jewelry started to trend and post WWI trade routes with Asian countries allowed for greater access to precious and semi-preciouse stones like jadeite, onyx, and crystal quartz.
Popularized by the flappers of the roaring 20's, who often wore long strands of these wire wrapped orbs, which had a unique way of catching and refracting the light. True Pools of Light spheres are made of clear rock crystal quartz, they'll invert an image when peered through at just the right angle, and they're always wrapped with wire or a metal casing, as drilling through the sphere would diminish the quality of light.
It's also been said that In Chinese tradition, each crystal orb contains a bit of chi (good energy) within it, which would escape and be lost if orbs were drilled or broken
