George Baxter’s Famous “The Lover’s Letter Box” (1860) with Baxters Stamp lower left side. An astonishing beautiful print showing depth and texture that you can actually feel.
The 18 3/4 x 23 1/2 Burl wood veneered frame is amazing even with all its age showing. The print itself is approximately 10.5 x15”, mounted on a board that was then glued to the mat (see photos). The artwork itself is in beautiful condition.
George Baxter's patented printing process was developed by him and patented in 1835. It meant that colored prints became more widely available as they the color no longer had to be painted on by hand. However his process was still very complex, the lithographs were printed from a steel plate the oil color was then added using individual wooden blocks, one for each colour. So prints such as these would require the individual application of five or six wooden blocks before they were complete.
