Caleb’s Crossing, by Geraldine Brooks (Viking; $26.95). In previous novels, Brooks conjured Restoration England, Civil War America, and Europe during the Spanish Inquisition. Here, she filters the early Colonial era through the eyes of a restless minister’s daughter growing up on the island known today as Martha’s Vineyard. Despite her father’s admonitions, the girl eavesdrops on her older brother’s Latin lessons and secretly befriends the son of the local Wampanoag chief. “Like Eve, I thirsted after forbidden knowledge,” she confides to her “spiritual diary”; instead, her fate is indentured servitude in the “vile town” of Cambridge. At times, the tale tacks toward wishful feminist fable, as when the erstwhile Puritan heroine, her “animal self” roused while spying on a tribal ceremony, sneaks off to dance half naked in the woods. But her voice—rendered by Brooks with exacting attention to the language and rhythm of the seventeenth century—is captivatingly true to her time.
