Vintage German Marzi & Remy Stein, featuring The Art Work by Spanish artist Bartolome Esteban Murillo, titled "Young Boys Playing Dice c. 1675"
Authentic German stein by Marzi & Remy. Pewter Lid.
The firm of Marzi & Remy was founded in the Westerwald town of Höhr in 1879 by Anton Marzi and Simon Peter Remy. By the end of the 19th century M&R employed more than 100 workers and had become one of Germany’s leading stoneware producers. Although it managed to survive two World Wars, the company found itself unable to cope with the rapidly changing marketplace of the late 20th century and was forced to permanently close its doors in 1994.
The stein measures approx. 7 1/4" H x 3 7/8" Diameter at the base x 3" Diameter at the top opening.
The capacity of the stein is approx. slightly less than 3 cups (24 oz.) to top of rim.
The stein is in excellent condition. No chips, nicks or cracks. There is a small manufacturing dark spot on the inside base. The inside of the stein is gray glazed. The top of the lid has a few surface scratches. Please see pictures.
Inside the lid is a paper label used by M&R post 1964. The bottom base of the stein is marked with the impressed M&R Shield used post 1964. It is additionally stamped Made In Germany on the edge.
The bottom of the stein is additionally marked Bartolome Esteban Murillo 1. 1. 1618 - 3. 4. 1682 Children Playing Dice - Made in Germany.
