This hand-painted ceramic jug or bottle was created by Sicilian aristocrat turned artist, Giovanni De Simone. This example of Italian pottery is painted in DeSimone's signature colors (yellow, orange, turquoise, green, blue). It features what looks like a soldier on one side and a lovely bird on the other - perhaps a commentary on war and peace.
The jug was heavily influenced by Pablo Picasso, whom De Simone greatly admired. It is a blend of Italian folk art and cubism. This jug or bottle is a relatively rare form for De Simone. You probably won't find another quite like it. Signed DESIMONE, ITALY 27" on the bottom. There is a tiny chip in the glaze on the lip of the opening. It would be easy to touch up, if you desire, but it doesn't really detract from the beauty of the piece. Approx. 6.5" high and 4.5" wide. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the lead glazes used to decorate vintage De Simone pieces, this jug is not suitable for food or drink.
