An outstanding athlete at UCLA, where he played baseball, basketball, and football, Jack Roosevelt "Jackie Robinson" was the first African American to Play in the modern major leagues--and the first elected to the Hall of Fame (1962). Admired for his aggressive style of play and team leadership, he was Rookie of the Year (1947) and NL MVP (1949). His lifetime batting average was .311.
