GREAT VINTAGE COSTUME PIECE What Harve Benard Taught Me About the Business of Fashion AMSALE ABERRA: It was at one of my first jobs in fashion that I learned the most valuable lessons about running my own business. My business, like most, depends on the creativity and productivity of its employees. Indeed, the most valuable lessons I learned were not about best practices in the operating sense. They were about stimulating creativity, and commitment to productivity, by developing a constructive company culture. The company I refer to was Harve Benard, a midsized fashion firm run by Bernie Holtzman. Harve Benard was a very popular brand in the 1980s and Bernie Holtzman was one of the most successful American fashion designers of his time. Though it's been 27 years since I left, I continue to practice the skills and philosophies I developed there. At Harve Benard, I witnessed firsthand how creating an environment where every employee feels valued provides a powerful success driver. He also instilled a sense of egalitarianism by frequently pitching in to help with any level of work. Watching the owner of a multimillion-dollar enterprise help stack bolts of fabric or push a clothing rack along with the lowest status workers made a lasting impression on me, especially as a recent fashion grad.
