The honored tradition of carving/giving love spoons dates to before 1600. Most commonly practiced in Wales, other countries across Europe also engaged in the custom. The spoons were carved from a single piece of wood by young men as a token to show his affection & intentions for his beloved. They served a 2nd (& perhaps more significant) purpose: It was important for the young girl's father to see that the young man was capable of providing for a family & woodworking (The spoons were intended to reflect the skill of the carver). Sailors often carved love spoons during long journeys (thus making anchors a commonly used symbol). Some lists of symbol meanings are in the photos above. The spoon comes with its original story card, pictured in last 3 photos above. Love spoons are traditionally placed on a wall by the fire w/ a bit of ribbon & are used today to record special many occasions (engagements, weddings, births, friendships, etc.).
Symbol Meanings: This spoon has 3 symbols carved into its handle:
•Clover: A wish for good fortune & prosperity.
•Shield: Intended to reassure the recipient that
the carver is willing to look after
& protect her.
•Single Heart: Demonstrates love & the desire
to win the heart of the girl to
whom the spoon is given.
