All 3 acts of the opera, including the stage directions, are written out in the book, both in English and Italian. There are many drawings on the 220 pages. It includes the translation and introduction by J. D. McClatchy. In that introduction he outlines the plot of each act in this opera.
Georges Bizet's final opera, Carmen, has become one of the best-known plots with the most memorable of music, despite its initial rejection by Paris critics following its scandalous 1875 premiere at the Opera-Comique, a theatre known for works of a lighter flavor. Basing their work on Prosper Merimee's novella, librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy have fashioned a timeless story of love, jealousy, and violence in Seville, all set into motion by Carmen, a seductive, free-spirited femme fatale.
On pages 16-17 drawings show the face in profile of each character in the opera. On all the following pages a smaller drawing of the appropriate face shows who is either singing or responsible for the action in the plot.
This gorgeous art coffee table vintage book will make a highly attractive addition to your home or office opera history collection and will add immeasurably to your knowledge of this well-loved timeless Bizet opera
