dlynch2009 Great Point! I just started selling online and that’s something I’ve never thought about. I am severely allergic to cigarette smoke, so this is something worth asking the sellers before I make a purchase! You learn something every day!🎊

lipsticknjeans @dlynch2009 absolutely. I opened a package and I had a severe reaction. I learned my lesson. Just wish it would be disclosed in each closet.

jillene002
jillene002 This is a great idea and it’s also good about items come in smelling like mold as I’m highly allergic to mold ended up in the hospital for breathing treatments due to somebody sending me clothing that was moldy, musty and dusty From sitting so long. Was in the hospital for over two weeks due to it. I’m sure they would not want to pay my hospital bills and my medication for it
Jan 17Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @jillene002 exactly!! To some is bothersome, but to others it’s life and death. Feel free to use it.
Jan 18Reply
jillene002

Jan 18Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @bell1971 yes they do! I had a LV bag sold and the lady gave me 4 stars because” I should not have sprayed so much perfume on it”. Nooooo, I did not spray anything on it! I called post master in her city and complained. I know it shouldn’t matter, but it does!

shwonie
shwonie Until I started selling on Poshmark I never knew people could be allergic to cigarette odor. Actual smoke yes, but odor? Soak an item in warm water with a cup each of vinegar and baking soda, rinse and hang out to line dry will get rid of smoke smell.
Jan 28Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @shwonie I have awful migraines and smoke triggers them. The problem with washing items is that you might not be able to open a return case.
Jan 28Reply
shwonie
shwonie @lipsticknjeans Have you talked to a doctor about your headaches? I had migraines for years until I found a doctor with a working brain who prescribed Inderal, a beta blocker. Overnight my migraines vanished and as long as I took the meds, no headaches. My message was for smoking sellers, should have made this clear. I always wash items in vinegar water before selling and have begun to mention smoke exposure when a buyer is interested in clothing.
Jan 28Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @shwonie yes, I do have a medicine that will take my migraines away for the most part. I made this listing, because I think it would be better if sellers indicate that items are exposed to smoke. That way the buyer can make the decision to purchase the items knowing that they were exposed to smoke. I had a lady who sent me shoes with mold which is again dangerous for other peoples health. I did hear about the vinegar and heard you can also put items in the freezer.
Jan 28Reply
americantan
americantan VERY important. Some sellers claim to have a nonsmoking home, but they purchase items from other sellers/garage sales that were stored in a smoking home. There is no way to remove the smell completely or permanently. It’s also much easier for a non-smoker to notice it than somebody who is used to it.
Mar 26Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @lolayoo my claim is my word. You are right. There may very well be sellers who do that. Items in my closet are purchased by me. We are a non smoking home.
Mar 27Reply
beautifulsam
beautifulsam @bell1971 what happened with those complaints? I have a case against me right now for a bag and the lady says it’s dirty and smells like smoke. I don’t smoke and the bag is new with tags, I’m wondering how this will turn out for me, I really don’t think it’s fair. 😔

lipsticknjeans @lesliewalter623 do not accept. Open a case. PM will decide
Dec 13Reply
lesliewalter623
lesliewalter623 @lipsticknjeans Thank you. Should I be asking sellers this if it’s not stated? I’m not asthmatic, but was surprised by the items condition and wouldn’t purchase if I knew.
Dec 13Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @lesliewalter623 yes. Although I feel it should be disclosed, but it’s not. I always ask if item is exposed to so a smoker.

mybellalove
mybellalove I just received a beautiful jacket that reeks of smoke and I’m hoping a professional clean will take it out. I wish the seller would have disclosed the item came from a smoker. Lesson learned to ask questions before buying!
Dec 26Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @mybellalove I’m sorry this happened to you. I would reach out to Poshmark. I wish sellers would understand how it affects non smokers. Very sorry you are dealing with this.

Jan 19Reply
yogirllilj

tommygirl7777
tommygirl7777 It's not needed just for those with health problems, but smoky smelling clothes just are gross. I don't know why people just don't disclose their items are not from a smoke free home. Why doesn't PM make sellers ratings available to the public.
Aug 10Reply
worthitmissy
worthitmissy My last two Posh purchases have been a total waste of $ due to this issue. Seriously, I would rather pay retail than small smoke. It triggers migraines in me.
Apr 16Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @worthitmissy I am so sorry that happened to you. I wish smokers would understand how it affects us. Specially if we get migraines.
Apr 16Reply
veryluckygirl
veryluckygirl @lipsticknjeans New to PM. My home is smoke-free but if I sell an item for my sister for example I can’t guarantee that there isn’t a subtle smoke odor that someone sensitive to it might notice but that I don’t. What do I do is the item is new with tags? I’d be happy to dry clean or launder an item to ensure it’s not going to affect anybody’s allergies be it mold, pets or smoke. Does that then negate being new with tags?
Apr 18Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @veryluckygirl the best advice I personally can give you is to say this in your description. “As you are a smoke free home, but items might come from a home where they might have been exposed to smokers.”This way, the buyer is aware and can make an informed decision. 😊.
Apr 18Reply
veryluckygirl
veryluckygirl @lipsticknjeans Thank you. I have one more question because you seem quite knowledgeable about all of this and I’m new :) Do you think it’s wrong to advertise something as new with tags and then indicate that I’m willing to dry clean or launder it?
Apr 18Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @veryluckygirl I would NOT do it. To me NWT means NWT. Just my opinion
Apr 19Reply
veryluckygirl
veryluckygirl @lipsticknjeans I would never do it without disclosing that I was going to launder or dry clean it but thank you. I absolutely see your point

drey805ify
drey805ify Would it be okay if I copied your pic and posted it? I keep running into this problem, and they never mention it in there descriptions or bio! I've even had somebody try and blame it on the postman saying maybe the mailman was smoking when he delivered the package! Like really?! With all that tape you had the box sealed with , how would the smoke permeate that?! It's ridiculous!
Nov 03Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @drey805ify absolutely please do. I truly don’t think that people know what a reaction to smoke can do to a person with issues being asthma or a weak lung system.
Nov 03Reply
maxcote
maxcote I just purchased something on Poshmark where a seller sold me a jacket that smelled like cigarette smoke, without disclosing it in the description but denies being a smoker (or maybe just thrifted it and don't care). Either way, in good faith I washed it, but the smell did not come out! I finally reported it but Poshmark will not stand by the buyer since I washed it (damned if you do, damned if you don't, right?) and now I have to live with clothes that gives me an allergic reaction.
Nov 24Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @maxcote that’s so unfair and unfortunate. I’m sorry. YES! Never ever mess or try to fix a bad transaction. Open case and let Support know.

littlelillee
littlelillee Just received an item this week described in excellent condition that reeks like cigarettes . Poshmark has sided with the seller who claims it’s impossible. The smoke has been completely absorbed into the item.
Apr 13Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @littlelillee I’m so sorry. Ok. I want to share this. Sometimes the Postal driver smokes in truck. Totally against rules but it’s done. Maybe seller lying and maybe not. I have learned to place item inside a sealed bag. Then tape ALL CORNERS of box to minimize that happening.
Apr 13Reply
littlelillee
littlelillee @lipsticknjeans thank you for sharing, and I want to give the seller the befit if the doubt, but every inch of the item smells. This was delivered with two other packages in similar packaging, and they are fine, which makes me think it’s not the case🙁.
Apr 13Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @littlelillee 🙁it’s frustrating and I’m sorry. Maybe air it outside. Newspaper also absorbs odor. I had a violent reaction to smoke and I’m super careful now. Good luck!

Apr 27Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @rhonda5976 yes! Please add that information so buyer is aware. Thank you for doing that.
Apr 27Reply
rhonda5976
rhonda5976 @lipsticknjeans I have updated my items with NOT A SMOKE FREE HOME. Sold 2 items today. So it goes to show some don't care or are smokers themselves.
Apr 28Reply
lipsticknjeans
lipsticknjeans @rhonda5976 congratulations on your sales. I understand that and I agree. It could be either way. However, and this is the main reason for my listing, is that some of us are allergic/asthmatic and do not like the smell of smoke, and want to be informed so we can make, a purchase and know what to expect. If I’m told what to expect, then there are no surprises and it becomes an easy transaction.
