Adah Isaacs Menken was born in 1835, Her father was a free-man of color, her mother said to be creole.
Adah would become the highest earning actress of her time, (after emigrating to France), as well as the only ‘poetess” to write in the style of What Whitman.
During her lifetime, Her poems were only printed in periodicals (magazines).
This small book, Infelicia, was produced (published), and offered for sale 8 days after Adah passed away forever young, at age 33.
The cover of the book still bursts with green, though it’s fraying from holding poetry for 156 years. Yet lo, the gilt-edged pages are still lush with gold.
Though it’s questionable how long Adah knew she was ill, she herself prepared this book for publication.
The book is dedicated to her close friend, Charles Dickens.

“I am lost to art and life. Yet, when all is said and done, have I not at my age tasted more of life than most women who live to be a hundred? It is fair, then, that I should go where old people go.”
