This fabulous JACK SARNOFF, New York, black wool coat is in wonderful vintage condition. It was sold by Jenny, Buffalo, N.Y., probably in the late 50's or early 60's. It is a very fine and “sort of” shimmery wool that is extremely soft and very smooth to the touch. I don't know if it is a cashmere or alpaca or silk and wool blend or a particular other type of wool. It is a warm heavy coat. The fabric is imported. The coat shows almost no wear and has no rips, snags, problems. The “Jenny” tag has loose threads. The back “seat area” (LAST PIC) has just a very slight sign of use. It is double-breasted with two rows of five large plastic buttons and two slash pockets, and a peter pan collar. There is a faux sort of cowl stitched at the back which adds a lot of interest. The color is a very pure black. I have lightened the pics to see the detail. There is a heavy satin lining backed by a sort of burlap material. The lining has been re-stitched in several places.
The coat is 47” long, 18” shoulder to shoulder, 23” armpit to armpit, and the inner arm seams are 14” long, the cowl hangs down about 20” and the collar is 5” tapering to the front closure. I generally wear a size 8 and this is just a tad big on me.
A very simple but beautiful design that is very posh and understatedly elegant.
Jacob Sarnoff was chairman of the Fashion Center at the NY World’s Fair. Company clients included Doris Day and Pat Nixon, notably Mrs. Nixon’s 1969 daytime Inaugural ensemble in 1969.
