@caligirlinmn @poshuniversity I use this as well for jeans. I will probably consolidate the 2 postings about jeans. It helps especially when describing the style. Many people mislabel styles. Knowing which leg opening measurement determines the style is very helpful. So is the front rise measurement pictured above. So many people mislabel mid-rise as low-rise, etc. It's best to stick with measurements and definitions. What I think is mid-rise is low-rise to most people...lol

For me the rise is very crucial bc I'm very long waisted at 5'6" but have short legs (which is quite common) A higher waist on many people would be more of a mid-rise on me, lol! I'm forever trying to explain the difference between long waisted torsos vs. short waisted torsos which ppl just don't understand!

@triciatx You know a lot about jeans, y? Would you ever do a comparison of brands? As in: if you like Gap's 1969 authentic straights, you might also like OtherBrand's Stick-Straightlegs...Maybe even size suggestions across brands... It'd be a crazy humongous project. But so cool to crowd source that kind of info?! Poshmark seems like just the place to get authentic response. Just has to be easy to contribute and aggregate. Okay, geek babble to a total stranger. Sorry. 😳🤐

@random_charm I am a buyer and a seller. It is really frustrating having to ask a million questions. I have had a few bad experiences where fellow sellers have lied. I have opened cases and returned jeans. It is a painful process. One person's idea of gently worn can be completely different from another's I have learned. I always ask if there are any stains, flaws, or signs of wear. If an item is prone to shrinkage I also ask about how many times it has been washed/dried.

@random_charm What I am working on is a comprehensive guide to fabrics used in jeans. This is very important to understand, so you know which questions to ask. Tencel is now pretty common in denim. Fabric softener should not be used with tencel. Tencel should be washed less frequently bc it absorbs water & dries quickly. It is also anti-microbial, so it repels odor. I have been doing a lot of research so I can write something up that is easy to understand.

@random_charm bc Cotton is more expensive brands are using various blends. Modal and Tencel are both forms of Rayon. They have different properties though since one is from Beech Trees & the other from Eucalyptus Trees. Hopefully I will get it posted soon. I am still reading up on some of the newest blends just coming out.

@random_charm I could never do a brand comparison, but I have learned a new way of finding fit (rise) based on your body. I will be including that as well. It will help people know which rise is low, medium, and high for them. Reach out to me anytime:) I am a total nerd and am fascinated with all of these new fabric blends. I just wish brands would be more consistent. 💋 Tricia

@triciatx So happy to meet a fellow geek/nerd. ;) I pretty much stick to the same exact jeans (and other pants) until the manufacturer changes or drops that style. It's also frustrating that many brands don't use measurements and terms consistently or even correctly themselves! I see many product descriptions that were obviously copied from the brand itself and still have gross errors (like the difference between crochet and knit)

My mom taught me to sew when I was a kid, she actually took pattern drafting classes. (Don't get me started on commercially available "sewing patterns"!) I supplemented with some great vintage books and the bible of the sewn garment industry - Kathleen Fasanella's Entreprenueur's Guide... and personal trial and error! Not so much lately, but I draft my own patterns, sew, mend, refashion, etc. You learn a lot about how fabric behaves.

I'm kind of a fiber geek too. I generally prefer natural fibers but there are some beneficial synthetics, especially newer ones. I wish more people on Posh would include fiber content!!! That might be more important to me than the exact color. Viscose is another term used as a synonym for rayon. Don’t use fabric softener on anything, lol. I'd be happy to answer any questions on fiber or point you to trustworthy resources.

@triciatx ITA that a guide to fabrics would be so useful! You go girl! I think I saw you wrote about how the % of a stretch fiber affects the fabric too. Very astute. Weave is another area: Although most jeans are twill weave cut on the grain (more or less, another peeve of mine), you'll run into some that aren't and those variations will fit and wear very differently! Oops, missed tagging you on a couple of comments. Would love to chat more, maybe connect without a 500 character limit??

@triciatx last one, I promise! I’ve done a fair amount with dye, mostly on both plant or protein fibers, which are two different processes. That has gotten me into the chemistry of both dye and fibers. Now I know why the exact same fiber and cut may fit differently in another color! Seems crazy but true!

@triciatx errrr.... I can't think who AG is! I live under a rock. But if you name a style then people want to know that it's going to look and fit the same way as the one in their closet with the same name. Otherwise, don't name the style! Some customer service will tell you how to find and decipher which codes mean what on their tags such as style, year, even specific fabric and other variations. That might be useful info on Posh for the more expensive and/or "collectible" items.

@random_charm AG is different. It is the first thing people want to know when buying AG jeans including myself. Most manufacturers can't decifer style codes & colors if they are no longer in production, which is becoming more and more common with limited release styles. Brands that constantly make new colors & fabric variations do not keep that information in their databases. This is true for Lululemon even.
AG is Adriano Goldschmied btw 💋

One thing I might add to this FANTASTIC thread is to measure the waist from the backside of the jeans. That's where our natural waist is. I just learned a great deal about vintage Levis from a pro and that point really stuck in my head.

I should also mention, I'm a vintage seller (newbie) and those tag sizes mean NOTHING to today's sizes. I realize this business isn't for the weak! I wear that measuring tape around my neck so much, I forget and go in public. The bank teller asked if I was a seamstress! Lol

@random_charm So kind of exciting....I found my mom's vintage Sears Kenmore 1802 Japanese Sewing Machine. I cleaned it up & it works! I have no clue how to do anything with it. Do you know anything about this machine? ☺️

@triciatx Awesome! Any metal machine is usually worth restoring but this one sounds like a beaut! http://tightacres.blogspot.com/2015/07/kenmore-15818023-no-2.html. I'd take it to a locally-owned shop and have them do a complete tune-up. Usually those shops will also show you at least the basics like proper threading, tension, etc. You may be able to find the manual as a PDF online or check eBay for a paper copy.

@triciatx Locally owned sewing machine repair shops often have classes too. Or if you know anyone who sews regularly, they should be able to get you started. It looks like a pretty standard setup but threading can vary a little and if you get that wrong, you'll be beyond frustrated. Are there accessories with it? Japanese made is a good thing too.

@random_charm I actually have the original manual in pristine condition. I also have a sewing box full of thread, needles, vintage patterns, and misc supplies. I turned the machine on and it works along with the light. Just looking at the instruction manual was overwhelming though.....lol

@triciatx Buy good thread. Coats&Clarks dual-purpose is fine. Don't use serger thread in a regular machine, it's not as strong. Old thread should be used with caution. Old needles are usually fine as long as there's no rust. No need to buy a bunch of different types. Universal point is good for most anything. 80/11 for lighter weights. 90/14 for mid weight. I do use denim needles for denim. Twin needles are fun and useful.

@triciatx Problems with stitches almost always have to do with incorrectly threading the top thread or a worn needle. Tension is rarely a problem. Let the shop set the bobbin tension, you'll probably never need to touch it. I use regular thread in the bobbin even if I use a heavier or decorative thread in the top. Start with a few neutral colors of thread: black, white, medium gray, taupe.
