Born March 19, 1948, Jean-Paul Germain grew up in a small Parisian suburb. The son of a local clothing merchant, he developed a passion for fashion early on. He spent a large part of his youth skipping school to stay at his grandmother’s house, drawing imaginary high fashion collections.
Obsessed with haute couture, the shy, naive boy was supported in his design ambitions by both parents. Germain started his first job in April 1968, working for fashion house Pierre Cardin while still studying for a degree. The position proved to be an all-consuming passion.
Later Germain would work for Jacques Esterel, where he learned much that would influence his signature style that he would further develop at couture house Patou. Returning to Cardin in 1972, Germain was sent to Manila to represent the company.
Germain’s designs at Cardin proved hugely popular among American clients, thus creating the incentive to spend the next 12 years designing in New York, creating his own collections each season. His clothing – from jeans to an haute couture collection – had wide acceptance and appeal throughout the 70s and 80s. His styling was classic, simply chic, and timeless. From 1988 thru 1992, Germain was Montgomery Ward’s in-house designer of the Jean-Paul Germain collection. It was highly successful. A July 12, 1989 issue of DNR states, “Jean-Paul Germain’s clothing encompasses a rugged romance and timeless elegance.”
