Beautiful and rare handmade Grecian Storytelling Plate depicting the scene described below.
Measures approx 6.5 in diameter and handmade by Xipolias Epidavros.
No chips or damage. Brown marks on back are glazing not stains.
Dionysus was the Greek god of wine, while Hephaestus was the god of fire and the divine smith and metalworker. A satyr with goat horns and tail walks ahead of the group playing a lyre.
Content: Dionysus, holding a staff and carrying a wine cup, leads drunken Hephaestus (holding his symbolic blacksmith's tongs) to Mount Olympus on the back of a mule. Hera, queen of the gods, had refused Hephaestus' advances, so he fashioned a throne for her that held her captive when she sat in it. Dionysus got Hephaestus drunk and brought him to Olympus so he could undo the bindings on his chair and free Hera. Hephaestus later took Aphrodite as his wife.
