Divided between a Low Series and High Series, 1990 Upper Deck Baseball is an 800-card set. The design is clean and slick, focusing largely on the player photo. They mix player portraits and action shots, but all are sharp, continuing the huge step forward in quality started by the groundbreaking 1989 Upper Deck Baseball. Adding continuity is the base line that runs along the top of the card. This references a similar base line found on the right side of the debut 1989 release and would continue as Upper Deck "rounded the bases." Card backs include a second large, albeit cropped, photo, vital player info and stats. The first 700 cards in the set are exclusive to Low Series packs. High numbers, which are a response to competing late-season update and traded sets, have the last 100 cards. High Series packs include all 800 cards, not just #701-800. Key rookie cards in 1990 Upper Deck Baseball include Sammy Sosa, Juan Gonzalez, Larry Walker and John Olerud. One of the set's lasting legacies is that it introduced pack-inserted autographs to the hobby. High Series packs debuted the popular Baseball Heroes line, focusing on Reggie Jackson. A total of 2,500 autographed cards were randomly inserted in packs. While it took card companies a few years to fully embrace autographed inserts, this went a long way in getting the trend started.
