During World War II copper became a vital metal in the production of ammunition. As the demand for copper grew the U.S. Mint made the radical design to strike the Lincoln Penny in steel instead of copper. Steel Pennies were first made at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia on February 27, 1943. They were also made at the branch mints in Denver and San Francisco. Starting in 1944, the U.S. Mint began striking the copper Pennies again, making steel Pennies a one-year-only issue. This three-piece set of circulated coins includes a 1943 Lincoln Steel Penny from each mint. The Pennies come on a dual sided colorful and informative mount along with a protective plastic sleeve and certificate of authenticity.
