In 1980, King Crimson, led by Robert Fripp, began shifting towards a more experimental, avant-garde sound. They combined elements of progressive rock, new wave, and post-punk. Their 1981 album Discipline marked a new direction, featuring intricate, interlocking guitar work, complex rhythms, and the use of electronic instruments.
