In 1888 John and Rosalie St. Clair came to the United States from Alsace-Lorraine France, a region with a long history of glass production. The family started their glass business in Elwood, Indiana around the turn of the century. Joe St Clair founded St Clair Glass in the 1940's, and after WWII started the tradition of the beautiful paperweights for which he is known. Joe passed in 1987, and at that time the family torch was taken up by nephew Joe Rice who founded what continues as The House of Glass.
