Featuring a Black, transgender man, and motivated by conversations with my White friends who firmly believe that racism and White privilege "is 100% not real" this drawing is intended to stop viewers in their tracks and implore them to open up their ears to a conversation worth having so they can open up their minds to true, lived perspectives that differ from their own. After all, one can only imagine how much more understanding, and how much less pain, would exist in this world if only everyone was willing to stop for a few minutes and just listen to each other--to really, actually listen.
Original artwork is on 11x14-inch paper and is signed and dated.
In the "Unsilencing" collection I use negative space as a metaphor for invisibility and silencing, and deep color and darkness as a metaphor for the daily strength and courage it takes to be visibly gender-diverse within a cisnormative society.
