AMAZING!!! No kidding they look brand new! I have a friend on FB who sells AMAZING vintage bags (coach) for AMAZING prices. I collect coach and she has some bags I've never seen. Her prices are absolutely amazing and so are her bags! She sold me a marc by marc petal to the metal bag (500 retail for 200). She's just amazing!!

@cdcarino
I looked at your bag. It looks like the leather condition is in good shape. No color fade or worn edges. The easy way to look new again without having to dye the bag, is to give it a good bath. This leather in the Classic collection was made to be washed. Once immersed in water, scrub the leather, in and out. To help reform it's shape, stuff the bag with packing paper or newspaper. Be generous packing. Once the bag is dry, it will be the original form it once was. Condition bag with moisturizer and shine metal up with a good brass cleaner. 😊
Oct 29Reply

cdcarino
Wow thank you so very much! Definitely will take your advice. What do you suggest using to scrub it? Would a regular wash cloth work? I'm so excited! Thank you for your help!
Oct 29Reply

laurieriales1
@cdcarino
You may use a saddle soap or even Dawn liquid will do the trick. Use a fairly stiff scrub brush. The leather over the years has held a lot of yuck. It's a leather, it has to breathe. ( think of a dog that goes outside in the rain. When they are dry, they are fine. When they get wet, yuck!) it may take a couple of days to dry thoroughly.

Okay, I'm definitely going to try this! Thanks again for the help. I will definitely be in touch :)

Dec 31Reply

Yes, I only restore the Classic Coach. I am familiar with the Glove Tanned Leather that was used in this collection.
Not all leathers are the same, be careful when selecting someone to work on your precious bags😃. Good luck.

You must work for or love these coach bags.. I LOVE the vintage ones!! Great closet!
Jan 08Reply

laurieriales1
@sbmilholland
Both! I left the retail side after they brought the Legacy Collection (sister collection closest to the Classics) into the stores. Since then it's been a labor of love to "dumpster dive" the Classics and bring them back to life! 😊
It's amazing how durable and well made these bags are. In fact they are ready for another 20+ years at a great economical price!
You can't say that about the bag you purchased at Target for the same price, two years ago...where is it now? lol 😊

Yes, I did work for Coach retail for 5 years. I left 2 years ago. I purchase my bags from at least 6 different sites, yard sales, estate sales, consignment stores, goodwill etc. I pretty much go for the "dumpster bags". These are the authentic bags everyone has given up on. They are the Classic Coach in grandmas attic or basement. With that being said, the authentic classics were known for their durability. I restore them and bring them back, one bag at a time.😊

Thank you! I try to normally find the "dumpster bags" ( the ones no one cares anything about) restore them completely the resale at a workable price for people to afford and give them a second chance. After it's said and done, I'm not really in it for a big profit share😃.

Your restorations are fabulous! It's SO generous of you to offer advice on restoring the vintages. Mom has her own originals that she passes on as she finds them. She also runs across them exactly as you do and I have quite a few I want to clean up. I wasn't aware they were durable enough for washing! @abrenema966
No, please ask away.😊What I like to do is take these great iconic bags after they become unused, abused and often discarded. These are usually the ones nobody really want. I wash, reshape, redye and clean all the hardware. I use and buy only authentic bags and hardware. I prefer only the Classic Collection with the unlined interior. The leather is glove tanned and made for its durability. If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask😊

I'm returning your message, "what do you mean restored?". My vintage Classic Coach bags in my closet have all been restored. These bags are dated back as early as the early 1970s. I wash, reshape, redye and clean all the original hardware. The transformations are remarkable.😊 thank you for asking and feel free to visit anytime😉

@laurieriales1 hi! What do you use to dye them? And also can you still find mink oil? I'm having a hard time.
May 18Reply

laurieriales1
@myptitecloset
Hi, thank you for asking. I use a leather dye not an acrylic. This company uses the same formulations of the color dye for both Coach and Birkenstock leathers. As far as the Mink Oil, I find it in most shoe departments or shoe stores. The last time I purchased, I found it at a sporting goods store in their shoe department.😊

@beigerubi
Glad I could help. The Classic Collection is a glove tanned leather. Make sure you know the leathers you are working with. Not all leather you treat the same. This leather is probably the most durable of all😊

Can you refinish hermes gloves?
Aug 22Reply

laurieriales1
@sechandchic
Sorry, all leathers are not the same. I work with the Coach Classics which are a glove-tanned leather. Hermes are a very delicate Lambskin leather from Europe. I would recommend calling their customer service. They will know what procedures to use for proper care☺️. Sorry I couldn't help you😉
Aug 22Reply

curvygirldc
@laurieriales1 I have Coach too that I'd like to send in! Just was curious about the Hermes... I already sent them to New York and they said their repair services are limited and returned them. 😕 any other suggestion? There's a stain on it that I'd like to try and get out.
Aug 22Reply

laurieriales1
@sechandchic
Unfortunately, the Lambskin is probably the most delicate of all the leathers. It is very soft and can tear or get skinned very easily. When I worked at a Coach Retail we sold some Lambskin gloves, they always seem to intimidate me. What color are they?
Aug 22Reply

laurieriales1
@sechandchic
I guess I should of asked if they were a smooth or tumbled leather or a suede exterior?
Aug 22Reply

curvygirldc
@laurieriales1 they're smooth leather, a vintage light tan from the 80s. They have chocolate mink cuffs detailing the wrists. I worked at Coach too! So trust me, I understand.😊 I own a black pair and they're thicker than the Hermes leather.
Aug 22Reply

laurieriales1
@sechandchic
So you definitely understand the difference in the leathers. 😊 I want to say the men's collection were suede an tumbled. The women were smooth or tumbled. You might could use a saddle soap on them but don't immerse them due to the fur interior. If you see spotting stain from the water, you may have to treat the whole glove evenly. I would then use mink oil to moisturize. The saddle soap is a very mild soap supposed to most leather cleaners.😊
Aug 22Reply

curvygirldc
@laurieriales1 great suggestions! Thank you ❤️

I understand😊. I'm always looking for the classics. I don't want to lowball by any means. I tend to look for the fabulous bags that need my help the most. This piece needs a little love as well as parts. I have a line I can't go above while purchasing due to cost, shipping, restoring, replacing parts then selling minus commission. I don't make a lot of profit.

Hi I was wondering what type of Leather Conditioner you use on your bags? I have a couple of black bags that look dry, I've tried a couple of different brands but other seems to give it the rich color like in your bags. 😊
Feb 03Reply

laurieriales1
@sabrow10
Thank you for asking😊. The rich color in my bags are mainly due to redying the bags. Most of the bags I restore are beyond normal wear. Most are worn piping with no color left. If your bags are worn with lack of color, conditioners will not help. If the color is fine, you can treat with a saddle wax. I finish my bags with Mink Oil paste (it moisten, cond. and repels water).😊

I'm no certain what you are asking😜. I enjoy doing this, it's not my job. Just a hobby. I have several repeat PM buyers who love the classic bags. I try to buy low (with still trying to be fair to each seller). Pay shipping. Restore each bag, then resale paying out the PM commission. I will give an additional discount to a bundle but really if you work the #s, there is a slim line for profit. It comes down to, I love doing this😉

Hi, I would love to help you with your bags😊. I have restored bags for other Poshers. If you could, look on my profile for my email. Send me some pics, inside and out. Don't forget the embossed creed patch inside for authenticity. Also, reveal any demarcations or flaws with the bag. I will check your pics out then let you know😊. Thank you!

I understand. I must confess, I restore the Classic Coach bags. This one needs a little love. Part of my restoration is having all of its original hardware, straps, tags etc. Don't get me wrong, I still am willing to buy these bags at a fair price, it's just that I will not resell as a restored piece unless it has all of its parts. I purchase these extras wherever and whenever I can find them😊.
Feb 22Reply

averybird27
Hahaha!!!! I love, that's fantastic. Well, I have about 20 of them. But these were the ones I just have up. That makes me so happy! I collect vintage everything, mainly textiles and interesting anything. I'm so happy you restore! I get my hands on quite a lot of these. I'll be in touch if I get some good ones that need restoring if I can get them at a decent price.

Hi! Do you have an advice for how to get black marks off of a tan coach bag?
Mar 12Reply

@dothrakidancer
I can try😊. Would you happen to know what they are from?
Mar 12Reply

dothrakidancer
@laurieriales1 I don't, I'm sorry. I bought it second hand & the marks were there already. I've tried saddle soap & it didn't budge.
Mar 12Reply

laurieriales1
@dothrakidancer
Well you have to be careful not to use anything to take the color out of the bag. Have you tried using a mister clean eraser? If the stain is on the surface and not penetrated, it can be erased off.
Mar 12Reply

dothrakidancer
@laurieriales1 I tried that, too & it didn't budge. I read in some of the comments that you use a Dawn bath on some. Do you think that might work?
Mar 12Reply

laurieriales1
@dothrakidancer
It won't hurt the bag but it being tan it may spot the leather unless you wash the whole bag.
Could you show me a pic and let me see it for you😊

Apr 18Reply

laurieriales1
@coachclassic
Excuse me for being so late. I restore the vintage classics. I gravitate to the bags in dyer need. I deep wash them, reshape and clean the hardware. In the process, I dye the worn, faded stained leathers. I use a reputable dye company that formulates for Coach and Birkenstock brands. This is a leather dye not an acrylic paint. It won't wear off or bleed onto your clothes. These bags are truly worn and I only match the dyes to the original shade these bags were made. 😊
May 05Reply

laurieriales1
@coachclassic
I hope this may help you understand the process. I had to shorten the post some because it limits the amount, sorry😁

coachclassic
I am ready when you are ready💋💋💋💋
May 05Reply

laurieriales1
@coachclassic
No problem😄. It is a process. On average it takes approximately 3 days from beginning to end on each bag( due to the fact each bag is air dried after washing). I wish these bags didn't have to be so extreme but they are made very durable considering they are 20-30+ years. The most important part of the process is in the washing. Leather is like a filter. When they are immersed in a bath, the entire history seeps out, including cigarettes which was very common😆

I would be glad to help you anytime. I've studied the "Classic Collection" for some time. This collection was spanned over a minimal of 30 years! During that time frame Coach changed directions many times trying to perfect its authenticity. This era never wavered on keeping the integrity of how this bag was made. After working for Coach for 5 years, I even noticed how the workmanship had changed from its earlier bags.

@kaboovang
Hi, be glad to see if I can help. Are the surface pen marks on the smooth leather side or the suede side? Are you sure the water mark is definitely water and not something else? Lastly, is this a leather Coach from the Classic Collection (different leathers do different things)?😊
Oct 15Reply

kaboovang
@laurieriales1 Food morning. Thank you for responding. I am not sure if it is the classic collection. It is the vintage white saddle bag one that is in my listing. The ink marking is on the outer soft leather side. I am not sure if it is a water mark. 😔 The flap of the purse is a little stiff from some type of liquid, that I am not sure of.
Oct 17Reply

laurieriales1
@kaboovang
Your bag is great! It's actually a rare piece. Coach introduced in the Classic Collection a line called the "Spectator" ( any style that is trimmed in a contrast color is considered a Spectator bag. Your bag is the Riding Bag Spectator in the Classic Collection. It is Bone trimmed in the Tan. They were introduced Fall 1989. Your style bag took the front cover of that catalog!
Oct 17Reply

kaboovang
@laurieriales1 Thabk you for the information! Wow! You are very knowledgeable. Would you have any recommendations for cleaning the ink and the liquid stain?
Oct 17Reply

laurieriales1
@kaboovang
Now to clean it. Your trim work looks great. The bone is a little dull. These bags are made of glove tanned leather (like baseball gloves). They are very durable. It being a light color, I suggest you putting it in a tub of warm water with Dawn Detergent. Scrub the leather, in and out. It will NOT hurt this bag. I am not going to suggest any solvent for ink due to the light color. It may remove the original dye. After, stuff bag with porous paper to absorb. Stuff it full.
Oct 17Reply

laurieriales1
@kaboovang
Use a paper tissue or packing paper. Stuff full, tap on bag to form the shape. Your bag needs to dry completely. The way you form it, is how it will shape when dry. Set in the sun if you can. When dry, you may use a leather wax or oil.
Good luck😊.

I just received the bag last night. I must say, I was disappointed and shocked with the PM explanation. They said it was the smell. You see all my bags go through a "deep" wash to remove all remnants left from the past. After you received it, you said it felt sticky. I wish to explain what you may if encountered. All my bags are deep washed and then reshaped. In this process, it structures the bags original shape back and may appear stiff. Continued-
Nov 08Reply

laurieriales1
@katrina357
Continued- Before a bag leaves, I use a finish coat of Mink Oil. This will moisturize and condition the bag as well as repels it from any moisture. Over time, it will naturally soften, the tacky oily feel disappears and the supple leather appears. As far as the smell, the Mink Oil has a temporary odor. I do apologize for your disappointment and I wish you well😊.

Honestly, Black is more readily available, next would be brown. Coach produced those two colors more then scaling down with other colors because of demand. Over time the colors are the more sought after due to rarity. The Spectator (named this by Coach for not the style but because it's the two tone), are going to be even more rare😊. To me color pops off of an outfit instead of blending in😉.

Thank you for asking.All my bags are dyed with a leather dye.No acrylic paints are used.I finish my bags with a fine coat of mink oil.This will moisturizer, condition and repel against moisture.These bags will not rub off on materials but can be transposed with whatever it may rub up to.In other words, the bag will not rub off dye but if it rubs next to jeans with dark ink, it could absorb its ink.Leather is porous.In time it can wear and fade.Keep it protected, it can last a lifetime.😊

I have a Coach listed on my page that could use a "pick me up"! It not the classic coach like you sell, but it is all leather and what I think is a classic bag in the making. I'd love for you to take a look!
Feb 26Reply

laurieriales1
@amandacarter115 I did get a chance to look.Kristen was a beautiful collection.The leather was a buttery soft texture.I was working in a Coach store when they introduced it. As much as I would love to work on this bag, the leathers are completely different.I feel you priced this bag to sell (this bag retailed close to $400.00! )I think the feature that's not stressed in your post is the size. If you took a pic holding it, people can see not only the size but how it hangs when being worn.

I have a British tan Willis bag and cannot find my strap anywhere. Any idea where I can get a new strap that looks original without spending the $90 that coach wants?
Mar 22Reply

laurieriales1
@anitawells
Gosh I hate that! I have accumulated a large parts supply including the original hardware as well as the straps. I intentionally look for bags with absolutely no hope for repair just for the hardware, at a great price. The eBay sites that sell parts are mainly reproduced, not authentic parts. Look for the bags in disrepair. The price may accommodate you for the strap cost😉.

Wow! You absolutely work Magic! ♥Two bags that I'd love for you to look at. One is a black classic hobo that is anout 15 years old. The other is a rectangle, small dark blue bag that my mother always wore when I was a girl. The bag is probably 30 years old. I will email you about restoration. I just got a new glovetanned leather bag for Christmas and I am afraid to carry it! I'm afraid blue jean dye will rub off on it. Is there anything I can do to prevent this color transfer? Thanks so much!!

@janetalvar
I just read your message and looked at your bag. I love the lunchbox style. Normally I would say yes to helping you with your bag. I formulate all my colors used to dye the bags. Once the color is worn off the leather, there's no choice but to replace it. This color in particular, is one of most difficult to formulate. Its not pale blue or even lavender. It's really like periwinkle. It's one of the hardest shades to match😬.

Yea, cigarette smoke is the worst. The good news, you can rid it fairly easy. Fill a sink with warm water and blue Dawn. You can use the same amount as you would for dishes. It won't hurt it. Put the bag in and let it soak a bit. Get a scrubber and scrub the outside and inside. Think of a sweaty dog going outside in the rain😕. All the smells from its history is going to come out.
Jun 29Reply

laurieriales1
@janetalvar
Continued- after you scrub it. Towel blot the bag. Get packing paper and stuff the bag to shape. Set it out in the sun for the day. This should remedy the smell. When completely dry, moisturize and condition. You will now have a much better smelling bag. Remember, these bags are leather. Just like the hide on an animal, they occasionally need cleaning. Everything that bag has endured over the years, is going to seep out during a good wash😉

I totally agree. I too worked for Coach. Starting years later, my first year was when Coach introduced the Poppy Collection. I stayed with them until after the Legacy Collection was in full swing. I’m happy to see you are wanting to purchase the Small Shopper. I just wanted to make sure that you realize I left it as close to you the natural patina as possible. Unlike all the other Classics, this bag is the earliest of the collection. It was designed by Bonnie Cashin, the first designer Coach had to bring into the mainstream. Because of this I just washed, reshaped and moisturized it leaving it as natural as possible. This is a true collectible. Very few to be found.

Thank you for asking about my BT Station Bag and about the restoration process. Here are some before/after to give you an idea. To keep my prices down I am looking for the worst condition of bags in this collection. They all get deep washed to remove all remnants of the past. Most need more work to revive the color besides a heavy moisturizer. I likely will dye them with a formulated leather dye (no acrylics are used).

Hi @laurieriales1 ! How do you mend torn corners? I purchased two Coach Willis bags from ebay for a steal but the corners are slightly showing the piping.
Feb 06Reply

laurieriales1
@hdrose1
Hi Haley. I use different glues depending on the severity of the tear. If the leather is torn (this is common for this style) through but can be fused back, I use a 2 part apoxy. I use a toothpick to distribute evenly under the leather then to fuse the edges back together as it dries. When dry, I smooth area with a fine emery board. Good luck😉

@laurieriales1 Laurie! You’re the one I was looking for lol. I’ve got a navy Willis that has faded so badly on the outside that it has zero blue undertones at all. The inside is still very nice dark blue. I soaked and conditioned, then followed up with blackrock, still a dark faded mahogany. I want a deep blue color. I’m considering redyeing it. What are you thoughts?
Aug 21Reply

laurieriales1
@blondietohell
Conditioning the bag can do wonders for reviving the color. But unfortunately, once the dye has completely worn off, even blackrock can’t help it. As you know, I restore them. For a fee, I can restore it completely for you😊.

I started restoring with a friend of mine. I worked part time for Coach and had always admired the vintage bags. My ‘real’ job is a hairstylist. I use leather dye for these bags( not acrylics ). Having the experience of formulating hair color dye it was an easy transition to formulate the leather dyes😊.
Oct 28Reply

mlopezcu
@laurieriales1 that's a talent. How do you manage to cover stains and dark spots with leather dye specially on the light colored ones? I have a pair of British tan shoes that are the exact British tan of coach bags and I can't manage to cover a spot I got on them with Fiebings leather dye. I'm thinking I'm going to need to get an actual refinish product to sit on top of the leather instead of penetrating it, which is what leather dyes do.

Hi, I’m sorry I never noticed the first message 😝.I don’t mind helping if I can. I use leather dyes, no acrylics. I formulate my shades according to the interior suede color. Unfortunately, I have not found a company providing these shades without having to mix them.

Hello there. I’ve been reading some of your comments and would like to consult on a bag I recently purchased. It’s used and in desperate need of some TLC mainly scuffs on the edges. I read on prev comments to wash it in dish soap and scrub with a brush. I’m afraid the scrubbing will scratch the leather no?
After the soap I asume lots and lots of rinsing to get the soap that the leather absorbed or no?
And the conditioner? Can it be any leather conditioner or one you recommend more than others?

Thank you for asking about my vintage Coach bag. I restore the early vintage Coach bags. I restore the ones that are given up on. These Classic bags are made from glove tanned leather and made to be durable. I deep wash, clean all the original hardware, reshape, redye (when necessary with leather dyes, not acrylics), and condition the bag. They are brought back to new life😊. Feel free to read my “Love Notes” for feedback.
