karina_369 @jesscolour84 I AM kinda an "armchair" gemologist at this point...what do you know about the provenance of this ring, besides "old"? Do you know for sure where the opal is from? Do you know what the surrounding stones are? Tourmaline perhaps?

karina_369 @jesscolour84 Could be ruby or spinel--if so--wow. Wow. WOW. Just cruising Posh--THIS stops me in my tracks. I HIGHLY recommend you have a jeweler, preferably a certified gemologist, take a look, and see if he/she thinks it's worth getting a good appraisal.

This could be VERY expensive. But it looks like it could ALSO be VERY, VERY, VERY expensive--like pay all your kids college expenses expensive/auction at Christie's expensive. Maybe.

karina_369 @jesscolour84 If you ever get a professional appraisal--remember that insurance prices ARE very inflated--but ask what they think real retail value is. Do not even think of accepting ANY offer, no matter how sweet, unless you know what this is really worth. You'd be better off selling through a big auction house, with a reserve you are comfortable with. Just sayin🌸🌸🌸

karina_369 Last--at this age, this IS apparently a very "stable" opal. As you may probably know, opal can be very sensitive to extreme changes in heat/humidity. Even at it's age, you ought to keep it stored away from sunny windows and air conditioning vents. But most of all, I'd suggest avoid wearing outside in extremely cold winter temps and moving inside and outside with high temps in car&houses, and taking off gloves.

karina_369 @jesscolour84 Please do!! The heat-cold thing--you don't need to get crazy about it, but the other thing--don't shower with it. And DO NOT wash hot dishes and/or stick on a "ringholder" in a window over your sink.. Not to scare you--this will be fine wearing in "regular" weather. Just leave it in the jewelry box on snowy days, and don't keep it near a steamy sink with a sunny window, lol!! THAT could crack it.
